Data Driven Applications: Custom Software Can Actually Save You Money
Why buy a car? For some people, using mass transit is a perfectly acceptable solution, requiring little investment on the rider’s part. So why do most of us buy cars? Because the bus won’t take us where we want to go and when we want to go there.
In the long run, a car lets us be far more flexible, more comfortable and more productive. The same holds true for custom software.
Data Driven Applications: Off-The-Shelf vs Custom, Both Have Their Place
We use QuickBooks to manage our invoicing and banking, and a contact management program to stay in touch with our customers. It would have been impossible to write custom software with the same features for the same price. So in this case, the off-the-shelf solution made the most business sense.
But, off-the-shelf software can have its limits. For example, our off-the-shelf programs do not integrate well together. To match customer data in our QuickBooks system with our contact management software, an export file must be sent to Excel or MS-Access, and then compared manually.
